Return to Denmark is not a simply Hamlet adaptation but instead a new, original Hungarian play, a reformulation of the Hamlet-problem in the mirror of the emotional and intellectual ‘answers’ of our times. Even thoug0h, here too, Norwegians and Danes fight, it is quite obvious that the matters at stake are ours, the play is about us during the change of the regime. Even the starting point evokes our all-too-specific Carpathian Basin reality: following a few years’ worth of student exchange, somebody returns home in a totally tormented country, which had lost its morality and pride, where the ethical checks and balances no longer work, where the imperative of survival, of staying afloat trumps all other values. The play is still about conscience, morality, the ‘voice of blood’, sin and pretence, helplessness and vacillation, like the play Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.
Csaba Kiss was born on 31 August 1960 in Marosvásárhely - Târgu Mureş. He received his first degree at the Babeş-Bolyai University in Kolozsvár – Cluj, as a theoretical physicist. After graduation he moved to Budapest, where he first started to work as a teacher of mathematics and physics, after which he became a language editor and translator. In 1992 he received a degree in dramaturgy at the University of Theatre and Film, where he has been working since as an associate lecturer, later as an assistant professor. Between 1994-1998 he was the artistic director of the Győri Padlásszínház (Győr Attic Theatre), artistic director of Új Színház for a year in 2000, and from 2012-2015, managing director of the Miskolc National Theatre. He was the founder, among others, of the SZEM, Színházi Egyetemek Miskolcon (Theatre Universities in Miskolc), also organizing DESZKA Festival, as a member of the Playwrights’ Roundtable (Drámaírói Kerekasztal). He is the recipient of numerous literary and theatre prizes.
